1865 - President Johnson offers $100,000 reward for capture of Jefferson Davis
1878 - US stops minting 20¢ coin
1885 - Good Housekeeping magazine goes on sale for the first time.
1890 - The Oklahoma Territory was organized.
1918 - General Motors acquires the Chevrolet Motor Company of Delaware.
1920 - The first game of the Negro National League baseball is played in Indianapolis.
1932 - Comedian Jack Benny's radio show airs for the first time.
1933 - The first modern sighting of the Loch Ness monster is reported.
1939 - Lou Gehrig's streak of 2130 consecutive Major League Baseball games played comes to an end. The record will stand for 56 years before Cal Ripken, Jr. breaks it.
1945 - First Helicopter Rescue--Lt A. Kleisch, USCG, rescued 11 Canadian airmen.
1945 - Russians took Berlin after 12 days of fierce house-to-house fighting. The Allies announced the surrender of Nazi troops in Italy and parts of Austria.
1946 - Prisoners revolted at California's Alcatraz prison, 5 prisoners die.
1952 - The first scheduled jet airliner passenger service begins with a BOAC Comet jet which flew from London to Johannesburg carrying 36 passengers
1955 - Tennessee Williams wins the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

1964 - An explosion sinks the USS Card(an escort carrier) while docked at Saigon. Viet Cong forces are suspected of placing a bomb on the ship.
1970 - Student anti-war protesters at Ohio's Kent State University burned down the campus ROTC building. The National Guard took control of the campus.
1972 - Buddy Baker became the first stock car driver to finish a 500-mile race in less than three hours, winning the Winston Select 500 in Talladega, Alabama.
1974 - Former U.S. Vice President Spiro T. Agnew was disbarred by Court of Appeals.
1974 - The filming of "Jaws" began in Martha's Vineyard, MA.
1975 - US Navy departs Vietnamese waters at end of evacuation.

1999 - Yugoslav authorities released 3 American POW’s who had been held for 32 days.
2004 - American Thomas Hamill, kidnapped three weeks ago in an insurgent attack on his convoy, was found by U.S. forces south of Tikrit, Iraq after he escaped from his captors

The largest adult male African elephant ever recorded measured 13ft 7in(4.16m) tall in a projected line from the highest point of the shoulder to the base of the fore foot.
Longest gestation period for a mammal
The Asian elephant has an average gestation period of 650 days(over 21 months) and a maximum of 760 days(over two years) more than twice that of humans. The shortest mammalian gestation period is 12 to 13 days by the Virginia opossum of North America.
