1831 - In Southampton County, Virginia, escaped slave Nat Turner is captured and arrested for leading the bloodiest slave revolt in United States history. He was later hung.
1864 - Helena, Montana is founded after four prospectors discover gold.
1888 - 1st ballpoint pen patented
1919 - Baseball league presidents call for abolishment of the spitball
1938 - Orson Welles' "The War of the Worlds" aired on CBS radio. The belief that the realistic radio dramatization was a live news event about a Martian invasion caused panic among listeners.
1941 - USS Reuben James torpedoed by Germans, even though US is not in war
1944 - Anne Frank (of Diary fame) is deported from Auschwitz to Belsen
1945 - US government announces end of shoe rationing
1948 - 20 die & 14,000 made ill by killer smog caused by pollutants in Donora Pennsylvania
1950 - Pope Pius XII witnesses the "Miracle of the Sun" while at the Vatican
1953 - Dr Albert Schweitzer & Gen George C Marshall win Nobel Peace Prize
1961 - The Soviet Party Congress unanimously approved an order to remove Joseph Stalin's body from Lenin's tomb.
1965 - Da Nang, US Marines repel an intense attack by wave after wave of Viet Cong forces, killing 56 guerrillas. Among the dead, a sketch of Marine positions was found on the body of a 13-year-old Vietnamese boy who sold drinks to the Marines the day before.
1966 - The Zodiac Killer kills his first victim, 18-year old Cheri Jo Bates, in Riverside, Calif.
1970 - In Vietnam, the worst monsoon to hit the area in six years causes large floods, kills 293, leaves 200,000 homeless and virtually halts the Vietnam War.
1972 - US President Richard Nixon approves legislation to increase Social Security spending by US$5.3 billion.

2001 - Michael Jordan returned to the NBA with the Washington Wizards after a 3 1/2 year retirement. The Wizards lost 93-91 to the New York Knicks.
2002 - In Belarus(between Russia and Ukraine) authorities reported the discovery of a mass grave on a military base at Slutsk with the remains of up to 12,000 people killed during World War II. Some 800,000 Jew of Belarus were killed by Nazis.
2004 - The US Army extended Iraq tours by 2 months for some 6,500 soldiers.

Fixing the Headstone
Two men were walking home after a Halloween party and decided to take a shortcut through the cemetery just for laughs. Right in the middle of the cemetery they were startled by a tap-tap-tapping noise coming from the misty shadows.
Trembling with fear, they found an old man with a hammer and chisel, chipping away at one of the headstones.
"Holy cow, Mister," one of them said after catching his breath, "You scared us half to death -- we thought you were a ghost! What are you doing working here so late at night?"
"Those fools!" the old man grumbled. "They misspelled my name!"

Stretchiest Skin
Garry Turner, of Caistor, Lincolnshire, England, stretched the skin of his stomach to a distended length of 6.25 in on the set of Guinness World Records: Primetime in Los Angeles, California, USA, on October 29, 1999.
Heaviest Kidney Stone
Peter Baulman (Australia) had a kidney stone removed from his right kidney in December 2003 at The Gold Coast Hospital, Southport, Queensland, Australia, weighing 12.5 oz and measuring at its widest point, 4.66 in.
Longest Leg Hair
A hair growing on the thigh of the left leg of Tim Stinton (Australia) was found to have reached a length of 4.88 in when measured at Box Hill South, Victoria, Australia, on February 2, 2005.
