1777 - People of New Connecticut (Vermont) declare independence from England

1892 - "Triangle" magazine in Springfield, MA, published the rules for a brand new game. The original rules involved attaching a peach baskets to a suspended board. It is now known as basketball.

1919 - 2.3 million gallons of molasses "Tidal wave" poured into the streets of Boston Mass. After a large molasses treacle tank burst drowning 21 and injuring 150.

1934 - Babe Ruth signs a 1934 contract for $35,000 ($17,000 cut)

1939 - 1st NFL pro bowl, New York Giants beat All Stars 13-10 in Wrigley Field

1940 - German U-Boot torpedoes Dutch trade ship Arendskerk (Eagle's Church)

1942 - FDR asks commissioner to continue baseball during WWII

1942 - Cubs, drop plans to install lights at Wrigley due to WWII

1943 - The Pentagon was dedicated as the world's largest office building just outside Washington, DC, in Arlington, VA. The structure covers 34 acres of land and has 17 miles of corridors.

1943 - Japanese driven off Guadalcanal

1943 - 1st transport of Jews from Amsterdam to concentration camp Vught


1944 - Vught Concentration Camp puts 74 women in 1 cell, 10 die

1951 - Supreme Court rule "clear & present danger" of incitement to riot is not protected speech & can be a cause for arrest

1953 - Harry S. Truman became the first U.S. President to use radio and television to give his farewell as he left office.

1958 - N.Y. Yankees sign million dollar plus deal to show 140 games on WPIX TV

1976 - Gerald Ford's would-be assassin, Sara Jane Moore, is sentenced to life in prison.

1981 - "Hill Street Blues" premieres on NBC-TV

1989 - Cerberal Palsy telethon raises $22,600,000

1991 - The United Nations deadline for the withdrawal of Iraqi forces from occupied Kuwait expires, preparing the way for the start of Operation Desert Storm.

1994 - Queen Elizabeth falls off her horse & breaks her left wrist

1997 - Chicago Bull Dennis Rodman kicks cameraman, Eugene Amosin the groin

1998 - NASA announces John Glenn, 76, may fly in space again

2002 - John Walker Lindh, a 20-year-old American seized with the Taliban in Afghanistan in Dec., was charged with conspiring to kill U.S. citizens and abetting terrorist groups.

2005 - ESA's SMART-1 lunar orbiter discovered elements such as calcium, aluminum, silicon, iron, and other surface elements on the moon.

Chess Playing Dog

A man went to visit a friend and was amazed to find him playing chess with his dog. He watched the game in astonishment for a while. "I can hardly believe my eyes!" he exclaimed. "That's the smartest dog I've ever seen."
"Nah, he's not so smart," the friend replied. "I've beaten him three games out of five."

Grandma’s Visit
Little Tony was so happy to see his grandmother that he ran up and gave her a big hug. "I'm so happy to see you, grandma. Now daddy will have to do that trick he's been promising to do!"
His grandmother was curious. "What trick is that, sweetie?"
The little guy grinned at her. "I heard daddy tell mommy that he would climb the gosh-darn walls if you came to visit us again!"

Tallest Living Man

After seven measurements taken over the course of April 22-23 1999 in Tunis, Tunisia, Radhouane Charbib’s height was confirmed as 7 foot 8.9 inches.

Tallest Living Woman
When last measured, Sandy Allen(USA) was 7 foot 7.25 inches tall. She stood 6 foot 3 inches by the age of 10 and was 7'1" by the age of 16!

Tallest Woman
Zeng Jinlian was 8 foot 1.75 inches when she died on February 13, 1982.
