1620 - The Mayflower reached Provincetown, MA. The ship discharged the Pilgrims at Plymouth, MA, on December 26, 1620.

1789 - North Carolina ratifies constitution, becomes 12th U.S. state

1877 - Tom Edison announces his "talking machine" invention (phonograph)

1902 - Baseball's Philadelphia Athletics and Phillies form pro football teams, joining Pitts Stars in 1st attempt at a National Football League

1902 - 1st night football game, Philadelphia Athletics beats Kanaweola AC, 39-0

1922 - Rebecca L. Felton sworn in as 1st female U.S. Senator

1927 - Columbine Mine Massacre: Striking coal miners were allegedly attacked with machine guns by a detachment of state police dressed in civilian clothes.

1938 - Nazi forces occupy western Czech and declared them German citizens

1942 - The completion of the Alaska Highway (also known as the Alcan Hwy) is celebrated


1942 - Tweety Bird, aka Tweety Pie, debuts in "Tale of Two Kitties"

1946 - Harry Truman becomes 1st U.S. president to travel in a submerged sub

1949 - Bill Veeck sells Indians for $22 million

1952 - 1st U.S. postage stamp in 2 colors (rotary process) introduced

1963 - President John F. Kennedy and his wife, Jacqueline, arrived in San Antonio, TX. They were beginning an ill-fated, two-day tour of Texas that would end in Dallas.

1967 - Vietnam War: General Westmoreland tells news reporters: "I am absolutely certain that whereas in 1965 the enemy was winning, today he is certainly losing.

1970 - Vietnam War: Operation Ivory Coast - A joint Air Force and Army team raids the Son Tay prison camp in an attempt to free American POWs (they weren’t there)

1974 - George W. Bush is honourably discharged from the US Air Force Reserve.

1974 - Freedom of Information Act passed by Congress over President Ford's veto

1979 - The U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan, was attacked by a mob that set the building afire and killed two Americans.

1980 - An estimated 83 million viewers tuned in to find out "who shot J.R." on Dallas.

1985 - Former U.S. Navy intelligence analyst Jonathan Jay Pollard was arrested after being accused of spying for Israel. He was later sentenced to life in prison.

1987 - An 8 day siege began at a detention center in Oakdale, La., as Cuban detainees were alarmed of the possibility of being returned to Cuba, seized the facility and took hostages.

1993 - The U.S. House of Representatives voted against making the District of Columbia the 51st state.

1995 - Israel granted jailed US spy Jonathon Pollard, citizenship.

1995 - Dow Jones closes above 5,000 for 1st time

2000 - The Florida Supreme Court granted Al Gore's request to keep the presidential recounts going.

2002- The 19 NATO leaders demanded that Iraq "fully and immediately" comply with a U.N. resolution to disarm.

2004 - The Paris Club agrees to write off 80% (up to $100 billion) of Iraq's external debt.

Perfect Turkey

A turkey farmer was always experimenting with breeding to perfect a better turkey.
His family was fond of the leg portion for dinner and there were never enough legs for everyone. After many frustrating attempts, the farmer was relating the results of his efforts to his friends at the general store get together. "Well I finally did it! I bred a turkey that has 6 legs!"
They all asked the farmer how it tasted.
"I don't know" said the farmer. "I never could catch the darn thing!"

World Records
Longest Ears n a Dog

The longest ears on a dog measured 34.9 cm (13.75 in) and 34.2 cm (13.5 in) for the right and left ears, respectively, on September 29, 2004. They belong to Tigger, a bloodhound, who is owned by Bryan and Christina Flessner of St Joseph, Illinois, USA.

Longest Ears on a Rabbit
The longest rabbit ears measured 79 cm (31.125 in) in a complete span on November 1, 2003 at the American Rabbit Breeders Association National Show in Wichita, Kansas, USA. The ears belong to an English Lop called Nipper's Geronimo who is owned by Waymon and Margaret Nipper of Bakersfield, California, USA.
