1843 - Mt. Rainier in Washington State erupts
1927 - The Holland Tunnel opened to the public, providing access between New York City and New Jersey beneath the Hudson River.
1933 - 1st modern sit-down strike, Hormel meat packers, Austin, Minn
1940 - The Walt Disney movie "Fantasia" world premiere at N Y's Broadway Theater.
1942 - U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed a measure lowering the minimum
draft age from 21 to 18.
1942 - Chaotic "sea battle of Friday the 13th" at Guadalcanal

1970 - Bhola cyclone: A 150-mph tropical cyclone hits the densely populated Ganges Delta region of Bangladesh, killing an estimated 500,000 people in one night(this is regarded as the 20th century's worst natural disaster).

1982 - The Vietnam Veterans Memorial was dedicated in Washington, DC.
1986 - U.S. president Reagan confesses weapon sales to Iran
1990 - The World Wide Web first began.
1995 - Seven people, including five Americans are killed in a car bomb attack at a U.S. military headquarters in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
1998 - U.S. President Clinton agreed to pay Paula Jones $850,000, without an apology or admission of guilt, to throw out her sexual harassment lawsuit.
2001 - War on Terrorism: In the first such act since World War II, US President George W. Bush signs an executive order allowing military tribunals against any foreigners suspected of having connections to terrorist acts or planned acts on the United States.
2001- Eight foreign aid workers, two Americans, two Australians and four Germans, held captive in Afghanistan for 3 months were freed from a prison by anti-Taliban fighters.
2005 - Chicago Bears cornerback Nathan Vasher returns a missed field goal 108 yards against the San Francisco 49ers, the longest play in NFL history.

Free Drinks
The bartender asks the guy sitting at the bar, "What'll you have?" The guy answers, "A scotch, please." The bartender hands him the drink, and says "That'll be five dollars," to which the guy replies, "What are you talking about? I don't owe you anything for this." A lawyer, sitting nearby and overhearing the conversation, then says to the bartender, "You know, he's got you there. In the original offer, which constitutes a binding contract upon acceptance, there was no stipulation of remuneration."
The bartender was not impressed, but says to the guy, "Okay, you beat me for a drink. But don't ever let me catch you in here again."
The next day, same guy walks into the bar. Bartender says, "What the heck are you doing in here? I can't believe you've got the audacity to come back!"
The guy says, "What are you talking about? I've never been in this place in my life!" The bartender replies, "I'm very sorry, but this is uncanny. You must have a double."
To which the guy replies, "Thank you. Make it a scotch."
Baseball in Heaven
Two old men had been best friends for years, and they both live to their early 90's, when one of them suddenly falls deathly ill. His friend comes to visit him on his deathbed, and they're reminiscing about their long friendship, when the dying man's friend asks, "Listen, when you die, do me a favor. I want to know if there's baseball in heaven." The dying man said, "We've been friends for years, this I'll do for you." And then he dies.
A couple days later, his surviving friend is sleeping when he hears his friend's voice. The voice says, "I've got some good news and some bad news. The good news is that there's baseball in heaven." "What's the bad news?" "You're pitching on Wednesday."
Exam By Chance
A young student reported for a final examination that consisted of only true/false questions.
The student took a seat in the hall, stared at the test for five minutes, removed a coin from his pocket and started tossing the coin and marking the answer sheet. Heads meant true, tails meant false.
The young student finished the exam in 30 minutes, while the rest of the class was sweating it out.
Suddenly, during the last few minutes, the young student began desperately throwing the coin and sweating profusely.
The moderator, alarmed, approached the student and asked what was going on.
"Well, I finished the exam in half an hour," said the student, "but I thought I ought to recheck my answers."

Oldest Tandem Parachute Jump(Female)
Estrid Geertsen (Denmark, b. August 1, 1904) made a tandem parachute jump on September 30, 2004 from an altitude of 13,100 ft over Roskilde, Demark, at the age of 100 years 60 days.
Oldest Professional Chorus Line
The combined age of the 10 dancers from the touring chorus line of The Tivoli Lovelies (Australia), based in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, is 746 years 147 days as of October 12, 2004.
