Ending retirement talk, Kurt Warner says he'll be back in 2007

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Two months after raising the possibility of retirement, Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner on Wednesday said he would return in 2007.
Although Warner left himself room to change his mind, it was his most definitive statement yet about his plans.
In October, the 35-year-old Warner acknowledged he had begun considering retirement after losing the starting job to rookie Matt Leinart. But Warner, who has two years remaining on his contract, said he's looking forward to a 10th NFL season.
"I've thought about it a lot, and I'm going to come back and play," Warner said. "I want to play. I feel like I've got a lot of football left in me.
"Not that that can't change when the offseason comes around and me and my family sit down and all of those types of things," Warner said. "But I signed a contract to be here with the Cardinals."

Igawa, Yankees complete $20 million, 5-year deal
NEW YORK -- As the Yankees kept talking about trading Randy Johnson, they finalized their $20 million, five-year contract with Japanese pitcher Kei Igawa on Wednesday. The Yankees had until Thursday to complete an agreement with Igawa after bidding $26,000,194 last month for the right to negotiate with him. The left-hander went 14-9 with a 2.97 ERA and 194 strikeouts for the Hanshin Tigers last season.
New York must pay the bid fee to the Tigers by Jan. 4.
The 27-year-old Igawa figures to fit at the back end of a rotation that includes Chien-Ming Wang, Mike Mussina and Andy Pettitte. New York also has oft-injured right-hander Carl Pavano and a couple of touted pitching prospects in Philip Hughes and Humberto Sanchez. The Yankees are discussing dealing Johnson, with the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres the chief contenders for the 43-year-old left-hander, a disappointment during his two seasons in New York.
Igawa gets $4 million each year and can earn $500,000 annually in performance bonuses: $125,000 each for 180, 190, 200, 210 innings pitched. He would be eligible for arbitration after the 2011 season, and free agency after the 2012 season. New York's biggest rival, the Boston Red Sox, bid $51.11 million for negotiating rights to Japanese ace Daisuke Matsuzaka this offseason and signed him to a $52 million, six-year contract.

The medals he wore included the Distinguished Service Cross, the second-highest military decoration given by the Army.

Madison VA hospital smoke free in pilot program
MADISON, Wis. A veteran's hospital in Madison is taking part in a pilot program to experiment with smoke-free campuses.
There are only five V-A hospitals in the U-S- that are taking part.
Since 1985 a federal law has required V-A hospitals to provide a place to smoke on their grounds. Until recently, the hospital in Madison allowed smoking in the psychiatry unit. But now that exemption has been removed and the entire hospital is going smoke free.
Director Nathan Geraths says one-fourth of patients the hospital sees have problems linked to smoking. He says 20 years ago a store within the hospital stopped selling tobacco and that was considered a major step. And then 10 years ago, smoking in the entire hospital, except for the psychiatry department, was banned. Other V-A hospitals in the program are in Minneapolis, Memphis, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh.

It's nighttime now in China. Burns, of Colorado, says rescuers were taking pictures and not disturbing anything. She says they'll return in the morning with shovels. She says the other body could be under the snow or connected by a rope.

Ford showed athletic prowess at Michigan
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - His deliberate manner of speaking, some highly publicized mishaps and a recurring Chevy Chase bit in the early days of "Saturday Night Live" helped advance the notion that Gerald R. Ford was a bit of a klutz. In fact, Ford was one of the nation's fittest and most athletic presidents.
Ford, who died at 93 on Tuesday, played center on the University of Michigan football team, where he was a three-year letter winner. His teams enjoyed consecutive undefeated, national championship seasons in 1932 and 1933. He was the Wolverines' most valuable player in 1934 and, on Jan. 1, 1935, he played in a college All-Star game known today as the East West Shrine Game. Michigan later retired Ford's No. 48 jersey.
During a 1934 game against the University of Chicago, Ford became the only future U.S. president to tackle a future Heisman Trophy winner when he brought down halfback Jay Berwanger, who won the first Heisman the following year.
"When I tackled Jay in the second quarter, I ended up with a bloody cut and I still have the scar to prove it," Ford said after Berwanger's death in June 2002.
After graduating from Michigan, Ford turned down offers from the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers to play in the NFL, Instead, Ford went to Yale to become an assistant football and boxing coach, with the hope that it would help him get accepted into Yale Law School. His coaching duties delayed his acceptance until spring 1938.
In April 1942, Ford joined the U.S. Naval Reserve as an ensign and he soon became a physical-fitness instructor at a preflight school in Chapel Hill, N.C. A year later, when he began service aboard the aircraft carrier USS Monterey, his first assignment was as athletic director and gunnery division officer. He was in good physical condition when he became president at age 61. While living in the White House, he swam every day, skied regularly and played golf and tennis better than most other presidents, historians say.
But on a number of occasions, Ford, while golfing, hit into the galleries that lined the fairways to watch him. News cameras captured at least one spectator being hit in the head by an errant Ford shot. Bob Hope, a golfing friend of Ford, once quipped: "It's not hard to find Jerry Ford on a golf course - you just follow the wounded."
