1774 - 1st incident of the Revolution-400 attack Fort William & Mary, New Hampshire
1809 - The first abdominal surgical procedure was performed in Danville, KY, on Jane Todd
Crawford. The operation was performed without an anesthetic. (Ouch)
1843 - "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens published, 6,000 copies sold
1862 - In America, an estimated 11,000 Northern soldiers were killed or wounded at the
Battle of Fredericksburg.
1903 - Italo Marcioni patents the ice cream cone (New Jersey)

1913 - Mona Lisa stolen in Aug 1911 returned to Louvre
1916 - Avalanche kills 10,000 Austrian & Italian troops in 24 hours in Tyrol
1918 - Woodrow Wilson, becomes 1st to make a foreign visit as President (France)
1936 - Final Boston Redskin NFL game, lose to Packers 21-6, move to Washington DC
1936 - Green Bay Packers win NFL championship
1938 - Los Angeles freezes at 28ºF
1937 - Japanese forces took the Chinese city of Nanking. An estimated 200,000 Chinese
were killed over the next six weeks it became known as the "Rape of Nanking."
1941 - World War II: Hungary and Romania declare war on the United States.
1944 - During World War II, the U.S. cruiser Nashville was badly damaged in a Japanese
kamikaze suicide attack. 138 people were killed in the attack.
1950 - James Dean begins his career with an appearance in a Pepsi commercial
1956 - Dodgers trade Jackie Robinson to Giants for pitcher Dick Littlefield & $35,000

1960 - Italy beats US in Davis cup (1st time in 24 years US not in finals)
1961 - Jimmy Dean's Big Bad John album is country music's 1st million $ seller

1964 - In El Paso, TX, President Johnson and Mexican President Gustavo Diaz Ordaz set off
an explosion that diverted the Rio Grande River, reshaping the U.S.-Mexican border.
This ended a century-old border dispute.
1966 - The rights to the first four Super Bowls were sold to CBS and NBC for total of $9.5
million.
1966 - 1st US bombing of Hanoi
1977 - Entire University of Evansville basketball team (14 players) die in plane crash
1978 - The Philadelphia Mint began production of the Susan B. Anthony U.S. dollar.
1982 - The Sentry Armored Car Company in New York discovered that $11 million had been
stolen from its headquarters overnight. It was the biggest cash theft in U.S. history.
1983 - 9,655 see highest-scoring NBA game: Detroit 186, Denver 184 (3 OT)
1988 - 3 men ride all 466 subways in New York City in 29 hours.
1991 - Ricky Pierce (Seattle) ends NBA free throw streak of 75 games

2003 - Former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein is captured near his home town of Tikrit

The Seagull

A father was at the beach with his children when the four-year-old son ran up to him, grabbed his hand, and led him to the shore, where a seagull lay dead in the sand.
"Daddy, what happened to him?" the son asked.
"He died and went to Heaven," the dad replied.
The boy thought a moment and then said, "Did God throw him back down?"

Marry Me!
An elderly widow and widower were dating for about five years. The man finally decided to ask her to marry. She immediately said "yes".
The next morning when he awoke, he couldn't remember what her answer was! "Was she happy? I think so, wait, no, she looked at me funny..."
After about an hour of trying to remember to no avail, he got on the telephone and gave her a call. Embarrassed, he admitted that he didn't remember her answer to the marriage proposal.
"Oh", she said, "I'm so glad you called. I remembered saying 'yes' to someone, but I couldn't remember who it was."

Largest Catalogue

The largest fashion catalogue had 212 pages measuring 3 ft 11 in x 4 ft 11 in and was a replica of the Bon Prix S2 catalogue Voila! when unveiled in Hamburg, Germany.

The Best Selling Copyright Book
In November 2003, Guinness World Records celebrated the publication of its 100 millionth copy! This confirms that, excluding non-copyright works such as the Bible and the Koran, the definitive book of world records is the world's best selling book.
It was first published in October 1955 by Guinness Superlatives, a subsidiary of Arthur Guinness Son Co. (Park Royal) Ltd and has since gone global, selling in some 37 languages.Comparatively, the five Harry Potter books to date have sold over 100 million copies, and Mao Tse-Tung's Little Red Book was sold or given away to around 900 million.
