1800 - Washington, DC, was established as the capital of the United States.
1899 - George Grant patented the wooden golf tee.
1900 - Charles M. Schwab formed the United States Steel Corporation.
1913 - "Mona Lisa", recovered after being stolen from the Louvre Museum in 1911
1917 - Father Edward Flanagan founded Boys Town outside Omaha, NE.
1936 - Chinese leader Chiang Kai-shek declares war on Japan
1937 - Japanese aircraft shell & sink US gunboat Panay on Yangtze River in China. (Japan apologized & eventually paid US $2.2 million in reparations)

1939 - Soviet prison ship Indigirka, carrying 2,500 prisoners capsizes in blizzard off Japanese coast; 2,470 die
1941 - World War II: Great Britain declares war on Bulgaria. Hungary and Romania declare war on the United States. India declares war on Japan.
1946 - UN accepts 6 Manhattan blocks as a gift from John D Rockefeller Jr
1946 - Tide detergent introduced
1949 - AL votes 7-1 rejecting legalizing the spitball

1982 - $9,800,000 in cash stolen from money transport car in New York NY
1983 - Car bombs were set off in front of the French and U.S. embassies in Kuwait City. Shiite extremists were responsible for the five deaths and 86 wounded. Total of five bombs went off in different locations.

1985 - 248 American soldiers were killed when an Arrow Air charter crashed
1989 - Leona Helmsley was fined $7 million and got four years in prison for tax evasion
1991 - Actor Richard Gere marries supermodel Cindy Crawford
1997 - Fed judge sentences Autumn Jackson, who claims to be Bill Cosby's daughter, to 26 months for trying to extort $40 million from him
2000 - Timothy McVeigh, over the objections of his lawyers, abandoned his final round of appeals and asked that his execution be set within 120 days.
2000 - The Texas Rangers signed Alex Rodriguez to a record breaking 10-year, $252 million contract.
2001 - Actress Winona Ryder was arrested for shoplifting and possessing pharmaceutical drugs without a prescription. The items of clothing were valued at $4,760.
2002 - North Korea announced that it would reactivate a nuclear power plant that U.S. officials believed was being to develop weapons.

The longest cartoon strip made by a group measured 238.4 m (782 ft 2 in) in length and was made by 596 artists during the 2003 Frankfurt Book Fair, Germany between October 10-12, 2003.

Longest Drawing
The longest drawing measured 3,839.14 m (12,595.58 ft) and was made by approximately 900 employees, friends and family of Pentel Co. Ltd in Makuhari Messe, Japan on October 1, 2005.

Longest Painting by Numbers
A painting by numbers measuring 110 m (360 ft 10 in) long and the regulation 1 m (3 ft) wide, was created for the Jetix Challenge 2004 and painted by children in the towns of Copenhagen and Arhus, Denmark and Hamr Trondheim, Lagunen, Ski, Norway.
