1716 - 1st lighthouse in US lit (Boston Harbor)

1807 - Former U.S. Vice President Aaron Burr was acquitted of a misdemeanor charge. Two weeks earlier Burr had been found innocent of treason.

1814 - Francis Scott Key wrote the "Star-Spangled Banner," a poem originally known as "Defense of Fort McHenry," after witnessing the British bombardment of Fort McHenry, MD, during the War of 1812. The song became the official U.S. national anthem on March 3, 1931.

1901 - U.S. President William McKinley died of gunshot wounds inflicted by an assassin. Vice President Theodore Roosevelt, at age 42, succeeded him.

1940 - The Selective Service Act was passed by the U.S. Congress providing the first peacetime draft in the United States.

1942 - Yankees clinch pennant #13 and in 1943 Yankees clinch pennant #14


1948 - Milton Berle starts his TV career on Texaco Star Theater

1959 - Luna II, a Soviet space probe, became the first man-made object on the moon when it crashed on the surface.

1960 - The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) was founded. The core members were Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela.

1963 - Mary Ann Fischer gave birth to America's first surviving quintuplets.

1965 - "My Mother The Car" premiered on NBC TV. The series was canceled after only a few weeks after the debut.

1969 - On December 1, 1969 September 14th is drawn as the first date in the U.S. draft during the Vietnam War.

1972 - "The Waltons" premiered on CBS-TV.

1973 - Pres Nixon signed into law a measure lifting pro football's blackout

1975 - Pope Paul VI declared Mother Elizabeth Ann Seton the first U.S.-born saint.

1978 - "Mork & Mindy" premiered on ABC-TV.

1981 - Entertainment Tonight premiers on TV

1982 - 36" snowfall (Red Lodge, MT)

1983 - The U.S. House of Representatives voted 416-0 in a resolution condemning the Soviet Union for the shooting down of a Korean jet on September 1.

1984 - Joe Kittinger is the first person to fly a hot air balloon alone across the Atlantic.

1990 - Ken Griffey, Jr. and his father, Ken Griffey, Sr. become the first father-son duo to hit back-to-back home runs.

1994 - The Major League Baseball season is canceled because of a strike.

1998 - In Miami ten people were charged in what prosecutors said was the largest Cuban spy ring uncovered in the United States since Fidel Castro came to power.

2001 - Pres. Bush declared a national emergency and summoned as many as 50,000 military reservists. Congress approved nearly $40 billion and gave Pres. Bush war powers ok. The number of hijackers involved in the Sep 11 attacks was raised from 18 to 19 and their names were made public by the FBI.

Joke of the Day
No Taillight

"How long have you been driving without a tail light?" asked the policeman after pulling over a motorist.
The driver jumped out, ran to the rear of his car, and gave a long, painful groan.
He seemed so upset that the cop was moved to ease up on him a bit.
"Come on, now," he said, "you don't have to take it so hard. It isn't that serious."
"It isn't?" cried the motorist. "Then you know what happened to my boat and trailer?"

Anniversary Gift
For their anniversary, a couple went out for a romantic dinner. Their teenage daughters said they would fix a dessert and leave it waiting.
When they got home, they saw that the dining room table was beautifully set with china, crystal and candles, and there was a note that read: "Your dessert is in the refrigerator. We are staying with friends, so go ahead and do something we wouldn't do!" "
I suppose," the husband responded dryly, "we could clean the house."



World Records
Longest Car

The longest car ever built is a 100-ft, 26-wheeled limousine, designed by Jay Ohrberg of Burbank, California, USA. Used mainly in films and exhibitions, its features include a swimming pool with diving board and a king-sized waterbed. The car is designed to drive as a rigid vehicle, or it can be changed to bend in the middle.

Longest driven journey
Emil and Liliana Schmid (Switzerland) have covered 363,176 miles in their Toyota Land Cruiser since October 16, 1984, crossing over 150 countries and territories in the process.

Most wins at the Le Mans 24-hour race
The most wins by an individual at the Le Mans 24-hour race is seven by Tom Kristensen (Denmark) in 1997 and 2000-05.
