1812- The Waltz was introduced into English ballrooms - Most observers consider it disgusting & immoral. No wonder it caught on!
1858 - Minnesota was admitted as the 32nd U.S. state.
1928 - General Electric opens 1st TV-station (Schenectady NY)
1934 - A severe two-day dust storm stripped the topsoil from the great plains of the U.S. and created a "Dust Bowl." The storm was one of many.
1944 - A major offensive was launched by the allied forces in central Italy.
1947 - The creation of the tubeless tire was announced by the B.F. Goodrich Company.
1953 - Tornado kills 114 in Waco TX ($39 million damage)
1957 - Buddy Holly and the Crickets auditioned for "Arthur Godfrey's Talend Scouts" and were rejected.
1960 - Israeli soldiers captured Adolf Eichmann in Buenos Aires.
1965 - The Byrds made their TV debut with "Mr. Tambourine Man" on NBC's "Hullabaloo."
1965 - 1st of 2 cyclones in less than a month kills 35,000 (India)
1965 - Ellis Island added to Statue of Liberty National monument

1967 - 100,000,000th US phone connected
1970 - Sammy Davis Jr weds Altovise
1976 - Last broadcast of "Marcus Welby, MD" on ABC-TV
1978 - Margaret A Brewer is 1st female general in the US Marine Corps
1981 - Kim Carnes' "Bette Davis Eyes" hits #1, stay there 9 weeks
1988 - Mario Andretti records fastest Indianapolis 500 lap (221.565 mph)
1989 - President Bush orders nearly 2,000 troops to Panamá
1989 - 217th & final episode of "Dynasty" is aired
1995 - Jimmy Vaughn, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Buddy Guy and Robert Cray reunited for a tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughn. All five had played with Vaughan at his last show on August 26, 1990, before he was killed in a helicopter crash.
1996 - An Atlanta-bound ValuJet DC-9 caught fire shortly after takeoff from Miami and crashed into the Florida Everglades. All 110 people on board were killed.
1997 - Garry Kasparov, world chess champion, lost his first ever multi-game match. He lost to IBM's chess computer Deep Blue. It was the first time a computer had beat a world-champion player.
1998 - India conducted its first underground nuclear tests, three of them, in 24 years. The tests were in violation of a global ban on nuclear testing.
2001 - U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft announced his decision to approve a 30-day delay of the execution of convicted Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh. McVeigh had been scheduled to be executed on May 16, 2001. The delay was because the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had failed to disclose thousands of documents to McVeigh's defense team.
2004 - A video showed the beheading of Nick Berg, an American civilian in Iraq. Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, was later identified as the beheader. Nick Berg (26) was from Pennsylvania.
2006 - A science team at the Univ. of Illinois successfully converted pig waste into crude oil.

How to Relieve Stress

1. At lunch time, sit in your parked car with sunglasses on and point a hair dryer at passing cars. See if they slow down.

2. Page yourself over the intercom, use Lord in front of your name and Don't disguise your voice.

3. Every time someone asks you to do something, ask if they want fries with that.

4. Put your garbage can on your desk and label it "in"

5. Put decaf in the coffee maker for 3 weeks. Once everyone has Gotten over their caffeine addictions, switch to espresso.

6. In the memo field of all your checks, write "for sexual favors".

7. Finish all your sentences with "in accordance with the prophecy."

8. Ask people what sex they are. Laugh hysterically after they answer.

9. Specify that your drive-through order is "to go".

10. Sing along at the opera. 11. Go to a poetry recital and ask why their poems don't rhyme.

12. When the money comes out the ATM, scream "I won!", "I won!" "3rd time this week!!

13. When leaving the zoo, start running towards the parking lot, yelling "run for your lives, they're loose!!"

14. Tell your children over dinner. "due to the economy, we are going to have to let one of you go."


World Records
Largest gnome and pixie collection

Ann Atkin, West Putford, North Devon has collected a total of 2,032 gnome and pixies all of which live in her four acre Gnome Reserve.

Most Densely Populated Country
The world's most densely populated country is Monaco, with a population density of 42,400 per mile in 2001.
The total population of Monaco in 2001 was 31,800 with a total area measuring only 1.8 km²(0.7 miles²). Monaco is a principality on the French Riviera and is perhaps most famous as a 'playground' for the rich and famous, with its casinos, marinas and the colourful lives of the Monaco Royal Family.

Most Densely Populated Island
The world's most densely populated island is Ap Lei Chau, off the southwest side of Hong Kong Island. Ap Lei Chau has a population of 80,000 who are living in an area measuring 0.5 miles². The actual population density therefore is 160,000 per 1 mile².
