1865 - American Civil War: Robert E. Lee surrenders the Army of Northern Virginia (26,765 troops) to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia, effectively ending the war. The four years of fighting had killed 360,000 Union troops and 260,000 Confederate troops.
1867 - The U.S. Senate ratified the treaty with Russia that purchased the territory of Alaska.
1912 - 1st exhibition baseball game at Fenway Park (Red Sox vs Harvard)
1916 - WW I: Battle of Verdun - German forces launch their third offensive of the battle.
1917 - WW I: Battle of Arras - Canadian forces execute a massive assault on Vimy Ridge.
1928 - Mae West made her debut on Broadway in the production of "Diamond Lil."
1940 - Germany invades Norway & Denmark during WWII (Denmark surrenders)
1941 - PGA establishes Golf Hall of Fame
1942 - Battle of Bataan, American and Filipino forces were overwhelmed by the Japanese
1945 - World War II: The German pocket battleship Admiral Scheer is sunk.
1947 - 169 people were killed and 1,300 were injured by a series of tornadoes in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas.

1950 - Bob Hope made his first television appearance on "Star-Spangled Review" on NBC

1979 - Longest doubles ping-pong match of 101 hours, begins
1981 - US sub George Washington rams Japanese freighter Nisso Maru
1989 - Scott Hoch chokes on 18 inch putt & loses Masters golf tournament
1989 - Hundreds of thousands marched past White House in support of the right to abortion
1989 - Rickey Henderson steals his 800th career base in New York's 4-3 loss to Cleveland
1992 - Manuel Noriega was convicted in Miami, FL, of eight drug and racketeering charges.
1994 - Singer Wayne Newton (52) weds attorney Kathleen McCrone (30)
1998 - The National Prisoner of War Museum is located in Andersonville, Georgia, on the site of an old American Civil War POW camp.
2003 - 2003 invasion of Iraq: Baghdad, Iraq falls to American forces.
2005 - HRH Charles, Prince of Wales weds Camilla Parker Bowles.

Are You Really Sure?

A blind guy on a bar stool shouts to the bartender, "Wanna hear a blonde joke?"
In a hushed voice, the guy next to him says, "Before you tell that joke, you should know something."
"Our bartender IS blonde, the bouncer is blonde. I'm a 6' tall, 200 lb black belt. The guy sitting next to me is 6'2", weighs 225, and he's a rugby player. The fella to your right is 6'5" pushing 300 and he's a wrestler. Each one of US is blonde. Think about it, Mister. Do you still wanna tell that joke?"
The blind guy says, "Nah, not if I'm gonna have to explain it five times."

A blonde was visiting the zoo for the first time. She was walking around enjoying herself when she stopped at the lion's den. When a male lion let out a roar, she said, "OH GOODY! I'M JUST IN TIME FOR THE MOVIE"!

The great red Spot on the planet Jupiter is the largest cyclone in the solar system. It varies in size but can be up to 24,800 miles long and 8,700 miles wide.

Fastest winds in the solar system
The planet Neptune has the fastest winds anywhere in the solar system. Measured by NASA’s border to probe in 1989, they blow at around 1,500 mph(2,400km).
