1848 - Wisconsin is admitted as the 30th U.S. state.

1910 - An airplane raced a train from Albany, NY, to New York City. The airplane pilot Glenn Curtiss won the $10,000 prize.

1911 - 1st Indianapolis 500 car race, Ray Harroun wins at 74.59 mph (120 kph)

1916 - U.S. forces invaded Dominican Republic and remained until 1924.

1932 - WW I Veterans begin to assemble in Washington, DC in the Bonus Army to request cash bonuses promised to them to be paid in 1945.

1935 - Construction of Hoover Dam is completed.

1940 - In WWII, Germans capture Ostend & Ypres in Belgium & Lille in France

1942 - Bing Crosby records "White Christmas" greatest selling record to date

1943 - Meat & cheese rationed in US

1945 - US 1st Marine division conquerors Shuri-castle Okinawa

1945 - American B-29 Superfortress bombers drop incendiaries on Yokohama, burning 85 percent of the port area.

1951 - 1st flight over North Pole in single engine plane-CF Blair

1953 - Edmund P Hillary & Tensing Norkay are 1st to reach summit of Mount Everest


1954 - Kirk & Anne Douglas married

1962 - Buck (John) O'Neil became the first black coach in major league baseball when he accepted the job with the Chicago Cubs.

1967 - Pope Paul VI names 27 new cardinals, including Karol Wojtyla, archbishop of Krakow, who later became Pope John Paul II

1974 - U.S. President Nixon agreed to turn over 1,200 pages of edited Watergate transcripts.

1977 - A J Foyt wins Indianapolis 500 (average speed of 161.331 mph) for a record 4th time

1977 - Janet Guthrie becomes 1st woman to drive in the Indianapolis 500

1978 - In the U.S., postage stamps were raised from 13 cents to 15 cents.

1982 - 1st papal visit to Britain since 1531

1982 - Pentagon plans 1st strategy to fight a nuclear war

1985 - Heysel Stadium disaster: In Brussels, Belgium, 39 football fans die and hundreds are injured during a riot at a European Cup match.

1987 - "Twilight Zone" director John Landis found innocent in death of actor Vic Morrow

1988 - U.S. President Reagan began his first visit to the Soviet Union in Moscow.

1990 - Rickey Henderson steals record 893rd base, breaking Ty Cobb's record

1995 - The last 3 bodies were recovered from the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City.

1997 - Span scientists announce new human species in 780,000 year old fossil

2001 - In New York, four followers of Osama bin Laden were convicted of a global conspiracy to murder Americans. The crimes included the 1998 bombings of two U.S. embassies in Africa that killed 224 people.

2001 - The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that disabled golfer Casey Martin could use a cart to
ride in tournaments.

2004 - A new WW II memorial was dedicated on the National Mall in Washington DC.

The Redhead
A young Redhead goes into the doctor's office and says that her body hurts wherever she touches it.

The doctor says, "You're not really a redhead, are you?"

Most Body Piercings in one session

The world record for most body piercings in one session is 1015 piercings in 7 hours and 55 minutes achieved by Charlie Wilson (UK) and Kam Ma (UK) at the Sunderland Body Art, Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, UK, on March 4, 2006.

Most Fingers and Toes
The person with the most fingers and toes is Devendra Harne (India) who has 25 in total (12 fingers and 13 toes) as a result of the condition polydactylism.

Longest Hair
The world's longest documented hair belongs to Xie Qiuping (China) at 5.627 m (18 ft 5.54 in) when measured on May 8, 2004. She has been growing her hair since 1973 from the age of 13.
