Thoughts On Aging
- Maybe it's true that life begins at fifty. But everything else starts to wear out, fall out, or spread out.
- There are three signs of old age. The first is your loss of memory. I forget the other two
- You're getting old when you don't care where your spouse goes, just as long as you don't have to go along.
- Middle age is when work is a lot less fun and fun is a lot more work.
- Statistics show that at the age of seventy, there are five women to every man. Isn't that a bad time for a guy to get those odds?
- You know you're getting on in years when the girls at the office start confiding in you.
- Middle age is when it takes longer to rest than to get tired.
- By the time a man is wise enough to watch his step, he's too old to go anywhere.
- Middle age is when you have stopped growing at both ends, and have begun to grow in the middle.
- A man has reached middle age when he is cautioned to slow down by his doctor instead of by the police.
- You know you're into middle age when you realize that caution is the only thing you care to exercise.

Stewart wins Allstate 400 at the Brickyard again
INDIANAPOLIS - Tony Stewart's first Allstate 400 at the Brickyard victory in 2005 was dramatic, but his second Brickyard win on Sunday was dominant.
The driver from Columbus, Indiana who grew up dreaming of winning the Indianapolis 500 has done the next best thing by becoming a two-time winner of the NASCAR Nextel Cup race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. "This one is for every one of the fans in the stands that pull for me every week and take all the (expletive) from everyone else," Stewart said.
Stewart's Chevrolet finished 2.982-seconds ahead of 2000 Indy 500 winner and NASCAR rookie Juan Montoya's Dodge Charger. Four-time Brickyard winner Jeff Gordon's Chevrolet was third followed by teammate Kyle Busch.
Pole-winner Reed Sorenson finished fifth in a Dodge. Sorensen is Montoya's teammate and gave team owner Chip Ganassi two drivers in the top five.
The race was a yellow-flag affair for the first half of the 160-lap race but it became apparent early that Stewart had the dominant car. He started 14th but was up to fifth by the eighth lap. He was third by lap 14 and first four laps later when he was the first off pit road during a yellow-flag pit stop. Stewart would trade leads throughout the race and was in front when the green flag waved with 20 laps to go chased by Harvick, Gordon and Montoya.
One lap later, Montoya drove by Gordon to take over third place and Harvick got around Stewart to take over the lead with 18 laps to go. With 15 to go, Stewart drove right up to the back of Harvick's bumper and began to pressure the 2003 Brickyard winner.
With 10 laps to go, Stewart drove under Harvick to take the lead in Turn 1 but Harvick got next to him in Turn 2 and drove him up the race track.
But once Stewart was in the lead, he drove away from the field to score a decisive victory. Harvick's Chevrolet dropped off and finished seventh.
Tyler ends streak at 3,769 games to see Ripken
BALTIMORE -- Umpire attendant Ernie Tyler will voluntarily end his consecutive games streak at 3,769 to see another man known for his ability to show up to work every day: Cal Ripken Jr. Tyler hasn't missed a Baltimore Orioles home game since assuming the position on opening day in 1960. This weekend, however, he will skip the Orioles' two games against the Yankees to be in Cooperstown, N.Y., to see Ripken's induction into the Hall of Fame.
The 83-year-old Tyler will be going as a guest of Ripken, who will pay the bill for the entire weekend. Ripken, of course, played in 2,632 straight games before voluntarily ending his streak in 1998. "I saw him was he was 12 years old. I knew his father well," Tyler said Thursday. "What better time to do it than to go now?

EAA Pilot Killed in Runway Collision
One pilot is dead after two planes collided on a runway at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, the EAA confirmed. The EAA said two World War Two-era P-51 Mustangs were landing after performing in the Warbirds air show when they crashed on the north-south runaway around 3:15 P.M. Friday. The condition of the other pilot is unknown, but we do know he was able to get out of the plane.
Nothing about the pilots is being made public yet, including their names or hometowns.
The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are on the scene. Witnesses told Action 2 News the two planes were performing races as part of the Warbirds show. Both P-51s tried to land in formation when one came down too close on top of the other plane, clipping its tail and causing it to flip over, then there was an explosion. The pilot of the other plane jumped out and ran over to the other plane, trying to help the other pilot. Firefighters were immediately on the scene, but the one pilot was pronounced dead.
Thousands of people were watching along the flight line, and said it was a horrible scene. The EAA AirVenture air show went on, though, but was postponed until 5 P.M.
Police: Missing student recovered from Fox River
Green Bay police say a 21-year-old student who disappeared two weeks ago was inside her car that plunged into the Fox River near downtown Green Bay.
Mahalia Xiong disappeared early July 13th after a night out with friends at a bowling alley and a sports bar. She was last seen getting into a white 1996 four-door Mercury Sable and driving off alone from the bowling alley in suburban Green Bay.
Her car was pulled from the river yesterday after an officer spotted tire tracks leading into the river in an industrial area of downtown.
Brown County Medical Examiner Al Klimek says preliminary indications suggest an accidental death with no sign of foul play, pending results of the autopsy and toxicology tests. Police say Xiong's vehicle has been taken to be processed for evidence.
La Crosse builds barriers to prevent drunken drownings
LA CROSSE, Wis. - The city of La Crosse has started to build barriers to help stop the spate of students drowning in the Mississippi River after drinking.
Work began yesterday on building gates, rails and chains at three entrances to a levee at the city's Riverside Park, which is two blocks from downtown bars.
Eight college-age men in nine years have disappeared from a city tavern and turned up dead in a river. The town has three colleges and three rivers.
The project is estimated to cost $33,000. It's expected to be completed by October first.
But city staffers say they hope barriers will be installed before classes resume at area colleges this fall. The new barriers include more railings at the main entrance that will form a maze people will have to navigate to reach entrance ramps.

Northwest Airlines flight cancellations continue
MINNEAPOLIS - Northwest Airlines flight cancellations are continuing for a third day.
The carrier has already seen 84 flights canceled this morning. That makes Day 3 of higher-than-average cancellation rates for the Minnesota-based carrier.
Northwest officials blame the cancellations on pilot absenteeism. The pilots' union disputes that, saying it doesn't believe there's been improper use of sick time. But if there has been a problem with absenteeism, it's probably due to stress. The union maintains the company doesn't have enough pilots to fly its full schedule.
Northwest says it has recalled some of its furloughed pilots and expects to hire as many as 250 pilots in the next year.
No time for a pet? Then rent one
A California company has begun offering FlexPetz, a new service for dog-lovers who just don't have the time to care for a pet, or the space.
The "shared dog" service is available in Los Angeles and San Diego. Its founder hopes to open new locations in San Francisco next month, New York in September and London by the end of the year. Hanging out with man's best friend has a price. The annual fee runs about $100 a year. FlexPetz customers then make a monthly payment of about $50. A per-visit charge runs about $40. The FlexPetz founder says only dogs with social temperaments are picked for the program. The current ten-dog crew includes Afghan hounds, Labrador retrievers and Boston terriers.
Violence amid the joy
BAGHDAD - There's been widespread joy in Iraq over the national team's championship win in the Asian Cup soccer tournament. But the day hasn't been totally free of violence.
At least four people were killed and scores wounded by celebratory gunfire.
In northern Iraq, gunmen opened fire on shoppers in a Shiite village near Kirkuk, killing seven people.
The military says two US soldiers also were killed, one by small-arms fire north of Baghdad and another in fighting in an eastern section of the capital.
But as night fell, there were no reports of bombings such as those that killed at least 50 in Baghdad last Wednesday during celebrations of Iraq's semifinal win over South Korea.
Authorities say they foiled a potential car bomber in southwestern Baghdad after he refused to stop at a checkpoint and appeared headed toward a crowd of revelers.
