1715 - The first lighthouse in America was authorized for construction at Little Brewster Island, Massachusetts.
1829 - In the United States, William Austin Burt patents the first typewriter.
1840 - The Province of Canada is created by the Act of Union.
1903 - Ford Motor Co. sold its first car, the Model A to Dr. Ernst Pfenning of Chicago.
1904 - Probably the first Ice cream was sold at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, Missouri.
1914 - Austria-Hungary issues an ultimatum to Serbia allowing the Austrians to find out who killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand. When Serbia denies Austria-Hungary their demands World War I is sparked on July 28, 1914
1929 - Fascist government in Italy ban the use of foreign words.
1938 - The first federal game preserve was approved by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The area was 2,000 acres in Utah.
1940 - German bombers began the "Blitz," the all-night air raids on London.
1944 - On Guam, On the southern beachhead, the marines cross the neck of the Orote Peninsula, thereby cutting off the main Japanese airfield on the island.
1944 - Elements of the 3dMarDiv completed the occupation of Cabras Island, Marianas.
1947 - First Navy all jet squadron (VF-17A) receives its first jet aircraft (FH).
1950 - USS Boxer sets record crossing of Pacific to bring aircraft, troops, and supplies to Korea at start of the Conflict.
1950 - Units from the 2d Marine Division prepared to move from Camp Lejeune, N.C., to Camp Pendleton, Calif., to join the 1st Marine Division.
1958 - USS Nautilus(A Sub) departs Pearl Harbor for first submerged transit of North Pole.
1967 - 12th Street Riot: In Detroit, Michigan, one of the worst riots in United States history begins on 12th Street in the predominantly African American inner city (43 killed, 442 injured and ~1,400 buildings burned).
1968 - Glenville Shootout: In Cleveland, Ohio, a violent shootout between a Black Militants and the Cleveland Police. During the shootout, a riot began that lasted for five days.
1973 - Pres Nixon refused to release Watergate tapes of conversations in the White House
1973 - Ozark AL plane knocked out of the air by lightning, St Louis-36 die
1977 - Washington jury convicts 12 Hanafi Moslems on hostage charges
1984 - Vanessa Williams, 1st black Miss America, resigns due to posing nude in Penthouse.
1986 - Britain's Prince Andrew marries Sarah Ferguson and divorce ten years later.
1993 - Sarah Deal becomes first female Marine selected for naval aviation training.
1995 - Comet Hale-Bopp is discovered and is visibly seen with a naked eye nearly a year later
1999 - The 3-day Woodstock '99 music festival began at the decommissioned Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, NY, with some 225,000 people. The $35-38 million production ended in chaos with hundreds of concertgoers burning fires, looting and vandalizing.
2000 - Lance Armstrong won his second Tour de France.
2001 - The US Pentagon shut down public access to its web sites due to a computer worm called the Code Red worm. It defaced web sites with the words "Hacked by Chinese."

Duelling Barbers
A new hair salon opened up for business right across the street from the old established hair cutters' place.
They put up a big bold sign which read:
"WE GIVE SEVEN DOLLAR HAIR CUTS!"
Not to be outdone, the old Master Barber put up his own sign:
